HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

A quotation widely atuilbuted to ancient phlosopher Plato highlights children’s misbehaviour in ancient times. The philosopher says, “The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannise their teachers.”
On the contrary, Jesus shows us the innocence of children by coming into the world as a child and reminding us about the value of children. Children were brought to him so that he might bless them, but the disciples rebuked the people. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.” His response is a good lesson for leaders, teachers, and parents about the need to cherish, love, protect children, and lead them toward God.
Children are not objects to be insulted, molested, abused, or maltreated but precious beings who should be consicdered a blessing and protected by every society. Jesus says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). How committed are we to bringing our children closer to God?
