HOMILY FOR SATURDAY JULY 16 2022

‘Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all.’

Sometimes the people who form opposition against us are the ones that should align with us. The people who should understand and support us are the ones who draw out sword against us. This happens even when it comes to faith sharing. The Pharisees were opposed to Jesus almost in everything. Today in the Gospel (Matthew 12:14-21), they went out and took counsel against Him, how to destroy Him. What was His offence? Shocked? These were religious leaders. So don’t be surprised to see ‘War in the Church’ because human nature hasn’t changed or ministers of the Gospel showing the highest level of bitterness towards one another. Christians plotting to kill one another has a long history.

The point of this reflection though is the use of discernment. In the face of opposition, we must know the right time to act no matter the resources available. We have to choose our battles wisely. In other words, it is not every fight that comes your way that you engage in. Not just because you lack the power or resources. It could take much of your time, cause irreparable loss, take you away from your goal, do more harm than good, or affect others much more than estimated. Sometimes you may be tempted to say you have the power and resources, and above all God is with you. The gift of wisdom is one of the best gifts from God and should be utilized when necessary.

The Bible says: “Jesus, aware of this (destructive plan against Him), withdrew from there.” With His limitless powers, He withdrew from hostile environment. Change your environment if it has become a source of troubles for you. Do not allow people to drag you into toxic schemes. You had better taken it as distractions and move on.

There are people who may instigate you to fight back. They may tell you how powerful you are, and how stupid it is to run away. But remember that wisdom is profitable for those who know its benefits. Some troubles are nothing but distractions. They can destroy your passion and vision if you focus on them.

Jesus also knew what God’s plan was. Significantly, despite the opposition He wouldn’t give up on doing good, and carried on ministering to people and sharing God’s love with them. Often we feel discouraged and stop being good whenever we perceive the least opposition, especially from those whom we deel never appreciate what we do for them. Jesus never changed. He maintained His goodness. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God have mercy on us, heal our country Nigeria, bless and protect us all through Christ Our Lord Amen. Please, stay safe. Good morning
