HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF EASTER

THEME: Challenge of Distribution

HOMILY FOR SATURDAY APRIL 30 2022

The number of the followers of Jesus increased rapidly despite the persecution they suffered after the resurrection . These early Christians lived a common life where funds and food were shared equitably . Over time , there was a division between Hebrews and Hellenists . The Greek – speaking Jews ( Hellenists ) complained that their widows were neglected in the distribution of food . In other words , partiality , discrimination , dissatisfaction , and dissension were beginning to break the formidable wall of a community that was united in heart and soul . There was a need to change the method of administration and management of goods and food by cultivating a culture of distributive justice . The Apostles listened attentively to the complaints of the Hellenists and put practical measures in place to address the problem . They tackled the issue by appointing deacons and ensuring division of labour between those dedicated to preaching the gospel and those committed to serving at the table . They chose reputable and just men who could take care of distribution with a sense of fairness , equality , equity , and transparency . The distribution of food and funds is the source of many crises and wars in the world today . One major challenge in Africa is the distribution of resources which is closely connected with resource management , resource control , as well as inequitable distribution of power and resources . How fair , transparent , responsible , and just are we in our churches and organisations ?
