HOMILY FOR SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5 2022.

The readings of today talk to us on the virtue of genuine generosity. The ability to share for the good of the other is divine, for God first shared of Himself, creating us in His image and likeness. We become “Godly” when we selflessly reach to benefit others.
St. Paul in the first reading (Phil 4: 10-19) thanks the Philippians for their sacrificial love in providing for his needs. He saw their gifts to him as “a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice pleasing to God”, and he prayed that “God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ”. Is there anything you have that is not a gift from God?

In the gospel (Luke 16: 9-15), Jesus Christ instructs His disciples to use the material gifts they have generously and honestly so as to gain eternal life for themselves. Trust is the keyword in living a generous life. Remember that “Jesus Christ was rich, but He became poor for your sake, to make you rich out of His poverty” (2 Cor 8: 9).

Dear friends, the enemy of generosity is greed, the excessive desire for personal gain and security. At times we tend to undermine the needs of those around us. We need not be afraid to share our gifts with others because true generosity does not diminish or impoverish the giver, but enriches the giver a hundredfold. By being generous, we share in the nature of God; we become like Him.

I pray that as we journey in life today, we will develop the virtue of true generosity, so that God who we can never outmatch in generosity, will keep lavishing His goodness on us for with “open-handed, He gives to the poor” (Ps. 112: 8-9). Have a grace-full day!
