HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I.

THEME: COME AND REST.

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

Rest, retreat, and recreation are necessary for a healthy mind, body, and soul. We complain of fatigue and exhaustion because of too many hours of work. We become workaholics who are obsessed with work. We desire to accomplish a year’s work in one day and wish to extend the week into eight days and the hours of the day into 25 hours. Consequently, our minds are full of many plans, the body is weighed dowmby labour and the spirit is weak because it receives little or no attention. We forget that we are neither machines nor humanoids, but human beings.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

God did not create us to run at full speed all the time. No one can do it all and no one is indispensable. After the sixth day of creation, God rested and he instructed his creatures to take one day of rest (Genesis 2:2; Exodus 20:8). There is a need to create time for relaxation of the body; the mind needs some time for recreational activities and the soul needs a quiet time for spiritual revival.
Jesus noticed that his disciples were too busy and had no leisure even to eat. He taught them how to withdraw and relax mentally, refresh spiritually, and regain physical stamina. He said to them, “Come away to a lonely place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). They needed a break to recharge their missionary zeal. How do you refresh yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually?
MARK 6:30-34; SATURDAY, 4TH
