HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: CHRISTIAN FAITH

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Jn. 14:7-14) Saturday of the Fourth Week of Easter

In today’s Gospel Jesus reiterates His unity with the Father. He wanted the disciples to know who He really was and what was His mission. He raised the challenge by equating the Father’s commands to His teachings and the Father’s work to His work. Because of these, Jesus was also challenged to reveal Himself and the Father.

The seeming confusion and difficulty of the disciples to fully understand the import of Jesus’ statement was very understandable. For them, an incarnate God is unthinkable if not impossible. At one point, during the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus confronted the apostles of their faith in Him. Peter’s response was classic, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (Jn. 6:68) It was, for them, a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation. they saw in the Messiah and hope in Jesus. yet there were words and claims He did which were hard to accept.

Peter and the disciples stayed with Jesus. They would rather be damned for believing and depending on Jesus’ teachings and miraculous deeds, than be damned by missing what He really wanted to offer. As we already know, the apostles were right to cling to Jesus. They were not damned after all. They were saved.

Even up to now, there are a lot of risks in being a follower of Jesus, a Christian. Christianity is being attacked from all sides, even from inside. yes, we have survived for more than two thousand years. But we do not rely on that stability of our faith alone. Our faith comes from Jesus Himself. Faith comes from God. Many would cast doubt on our faith. They will destroy the reputation and resolve of our leaders. They will question the relevance of our creed and rituals. They will find ways to discredit our institution, the Church. But they will not succeed because our faith is not just about creeds, rituals, leaders and institutions. Our faith is God Himself dwelling among us, suffering with us, and rising with us.
