HOMILY FOR SATURDAY MAY 28 2022

Apollos of Alexandria came with zeal and vigour to Ephesus to water the seed of the Gospel, which was planted by Paul during his second missionary journey. Apollos was fervent in the spirit and full of faith in preaching the word of God. Besides, he was well-grounded in his knowledge of the Old Testament, and he knew much about the ministry of John. Acts of the Apostles summarily describe him as “Eloquent and mighty (well versed) in scriptures” (18:24). However, his teaching was incomplete because he had little or no knowledge about some of the core aspects of the Christian faith such as the incarnation, passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. Priscilla and Aquilla, a dedicated couple who lived, travelled, and worked with Paul, were at Ephesus and were able to detect the deficiency of Apollos’ knowledge of the Christian faith. They invited him courteously and taught him “the way of God more accurately” (Acts of the Apostles 18:26). Apollos had the two perfect marks of a scholar which are the ability to teach and the humility to learn. Apollos was a talented speaker and he used this talent to preach the Gospel and defend the faith. We are also called to use our talents for the advancement of the Gospel. Are we like Apollos in our zeal for the faith?
