HOMILY THEME: HE IS THE CHRIST

HOMILY:

(Jn. 7:40-53)
Saturday of the Fourth Week of Lent (Day 32 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus creates confusion among the Jews and their elders. Because of what He said and did, they are beginning to believe He is indeed the Christ. But His background keeps on haunting them. Apparently, they did not know Joseph’s lineage. They knew that the Messiah will come from the lineage of David. But their concern was more of who Jesus was to them in terms of where He lived and His status in society. Nicodemus tried to defend Jesus but he was also rejected. The blindness of the Jews had spread and had become acute. The Gospels now are chronologically read. The circumstances of Jesus’ last days reveal a lot. The more Jesus reveals Himself, the more the Jews are blinded. They could not get out of their knowledge of who the Messiah should be.With that attitude, there is no way they could recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

Had we not know the whole story about Jesus, His passion, death and resurrection, would we be able to recognise Him and believe in Him the way we believe today? Or, is it the case when we still have some doubts about Him today? The kind of life we live should answer that. In a way we are more blessed since we know the whole story. Or are we? Do we take advantage of this knowledge? Every year we remember and re- enact the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. They were not meant to be remembered only in the mind. They were actually an experiencing of what happened before. Our response should be different from the Jews. Our response must be faith.
