HOMILY FOR JANUARY 7TH.

1JOHN 5:1-21; JN 2:1-11

During the wedding at Cana, Mary, the mother of Jesus noticed the wine had failed. She met her Son and begged him to help. Jesus instructed that they fill the jars with water. Mary said to the attendants: “Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus performed his first miracle by changing the water into the best wine. This miracle shows how Jesus supports and saves couples from the embarrassment of scarcity. St. Theresa Lisieux, aS far back as 1894, prayed for her newlywed cousin saying, “I am asking our Lord to be as generous to you as he once was to the bridal pair of Cana. May he invariably change the water into wine! I mean may he prolong his gift of happiness, and as far as possible sweeten the bitter trials you will meet ith on your way.” Besides, the story of this miracle teaches us how God helps those who help themselves.

This explains why Jesus changed the water into wine only after the people had performed their role of providing the water. In addition, the miracle at Cana teaches us how to relate with Jesus humbly and confidently in the same way that his mother relates with him. This miracle shows that the Blessed Virgin Mary cares for her children and continues to plead for them even in heaven. How humble are we in making our requests before him and how eager are we in following his instructions?
