HOMILY FOR SATURDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS!

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk.16:9-15) Saturday in the Octave of Easter

In the day’s Gospel, Mark has a brief account of the resurrection. For him, it was enough to state that Jesus had risen as testified to Mary Magdalene, she was doubted, but Jesus appeared to them Himself and told them to believe. Then, Jesus commanded them to spread the Good News to everyone.

The resurrection hinges on everything Mark had said from the beginning. Jesus is true God and true man. While the mission was told to the disciples, it was meant for all the baptized. Priests, sisters, and lay volunteers are not enough to cover every land, race, and soul to proclaim the Good News. Every baptized, by virtue of baptism, is tasked to proclaim the Good News. One need not become a priest, study theology, or be well-versed in the faith. Of course, that would be a big plus. But as was written in Scriptures, “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” (Jer.31:33) More than any solid oral preaching, witnessing comes first and above.

Thus, we must work together as a community and as a Church. While we live our lives according to God's will and seek First the Kingdom of God, we inspire others by that same life. In the very context of our life, we should be aware that we are being sent to proclaim the Good News to others. Whether in church, home, office, school, and even in parks, beaches, and museums, we must never forget that we are Christians. We follow Christ and we encourage others to do the same.
