HOMILY THEME: CALLED BY GOD!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Isaiah 49:1-6; Psalm 139:1-3; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66.80

Think about those who contributed so much sorrow and pain to the history of humanity; the Stalins, the Bin Ladens, the Hitlers, the Idi Amins… These people were once helpless babies with glorious destinies… Then think about those who inspired humanity towards light and greatness – the John Paul IIs, the mother Theresas, the Nelson Mandelas, the Ghandis… What’s the significant difference between these classes of people? Cooperation with God’s design – the one who formed, and called us before we were born.

Today, we celebrate the birth of St John the Baptist; the only one (other than Joseph and Mary) who has two celebrations in our Liturgical Calendar. John recognised Jesus before he was born; he was the first to have a different name in his family, at the mention of which, speech returned to his Father. He fearlessly preached repentance to everyone. And when the time was right, he let go and pointed Jesus out to his disciples. Friends, God has created us for some purpose. Birthdays should be occasions to thank God for the wonder of our being and refocus on our paths and purposes. This is so much better than going clubbing or uploading obscene pictures and videos on social media. What has God called me and you to do?

St John the Baptist, pray for us!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
