HOMILY FOR ST. STEPHEN - FIRST MARTYR

HOMILY FOR ST. STEPHEN – FIRST MARTYR

THEME: Beware of human beings!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Acts 6:8-10,7:54-59; Matthew 10:17-22.

One cannot trust people too much. We live in a world where brother can betray brother to death, and where fathers can do terrible things to their children. We’ve also seen children rise up against their parents and put them to death. It is a crazy, crazy world. This does not however mean that we should go through life with a perpetual frown on our faces, and with hearts simmering with hatred and vengeance.

The only ‘mistake’ Stephen made was that he was so filled with wisdom and the Holy Spirit, he performed miracles and prophesied among the people. Yes! Many will persecute us just because we are blessed and favoured. Some will go the extra length to tarnish our image. Some others would even seek diabolical aids to put our lives in jeopardy. But we must learn to trust God completely. Like Stephen, we must learn not to hate these persons; they exist in order that we can have a better chance of making heaven. We need to pray that they become truly converted. Above all, let us remember the words of Jesus Christ in the gospel reading of today, “but the man who stands firm to the end will be saved”.

Good morning dear, Happy boxing day! St Stephen, pray for us!
