HOMILY FOR THE 14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

HOMILY THEME: REJOICE THAT YOUR NAMES ARE WRITTEN IN HEAVEN!

BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke

Isaiah 66: 10-14, Ps. 66, Galatians 6: 14-18, Luke 10: 1-12, 17-20

In the liturgy of today, we are reminded that the goal of our striving is union with God and the joy of being in his kingdom.

Amidst the devastating circumstances faced by the Israelites on their return from exile, Isaiah encourages them to rejoice. The presence of God among his people, and his assurances of restoration outweighs whatever present challenge and disappointment faced.

In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul reminds us that the important thing in the life of a Christian is his transformed life model according to Christ. Our boast should be that we are emulating the sacrificial life of Christ our redeemer.

In the gospel, Jesus sends labourers into his vineyard, empowering them to perform miraculous deeds, especially that of announcing the kingdom of God. At their return, he reminds them that the most important benefit of their apostolate is not their miraculous deeds, but rather that they have become citizens of heaven.

Beloved in the Lord, our experiences in life, whether as good as that of the disciples before whom the devil prostrated, or as devastating as that of the Israelites who just returned from exiles, often deviate our attention from the goal of our Christian striving. Some are so successful and comfortable that they feel they are having their heaven on earth. Others are so devastated and disappointed that they despair and become despondent. In the midst of these two extremes, God reminds us today that our joy and happiness in life should be drawn from our perseverance in doing his will, and in savoring his ever-abiding presence in all situation life throws to us.

As we continue to journey along life´s pilgrim journey, may God give us comfort and encouragement in challenging and devastating moments, and humility in our triumphant moment. May we always model our lives in the example of Christ and live our lives in such a way that our names are written in the book of life.

Happy Sunday!
