HOMILY FOR THE 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C) – 31 JULY

HOMILY THEME: BEFITTING FOUNDATION

By: Rev Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

HOMILY: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23/Psalm 90:3-6,12-14,17/Colossians 3:1-5,9-11/Luke 12:13-21
(Rev Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare of Obuasi Catholic Diocese)

Many buildings collapse because they have weak sub structure. The Psalmist once proclaimed, “Foundation once destroyed, what shall the just man do?” Jesus once drew our attention to the need to build on the rocky mountain and not on sandy ground.

A life built on things created is as unstable, weak and unreliable as the passing nature of creation itself. The preacher calls it vanity. Life is not preserved by material wealth and earthly riches. God remains the source of life, of holiness and of growth.

In Jesus is life. Thus, there is no life outside Jesus. The singer uttered, “No Jesus no life!” We need to understand that creation is meant to serve the needs of humanity. Once creation, wealth, prestige, etc. becomes our focus, we forfeit our very life. The rich man in the Gospel is called “fool” because he made his wealth his God.

Any activity which replaces our homage, love, devotion, and dedication to the Lord is a dangerous snare for our souls. Let us not allow the pursuit of this life to blind us from pursuing God, our greatest good. Let us first seek the Kingdom of God and its righteousness first or we become fools.

PRAYER POINTS
~Forgive our folly, Lord
~That we can see the dangers of the inordinate pursuit of wealth
~For the evangelical counsel of poverty and simplicity
