HOMILY: Gospel: Lk 12:32-48

My dear friends, not long after I was ordained I celebrated Mass with the Mother Teresa sisters.

In the sacristy they had a hand written note that went something like this, ‘ celebrate this Mass like it was your First Mass and as if it were going to be your last. ’ When I was reflecting on the Gospel for this weekend this notice hit me. The Lord is saying to us – take each moment we have in life seriously – whatever we do make the most of it – be people of integrity and put our all into whatever it is we are doing, be that at home in the family, in our community, in our workplace or in some charitable involvement.

If we are coming to church for example, then come early and spend a few minutes preparing our hearts for what is about to take place – think and pray about it – so that when Mass begins we are ready for the wonderful and awe-inspiring event that it is. We can’t do anything properly if we are rushing or racing.

My friends, Jesus is encouraging us to make the most of our everyday for we don’t know what the future holds for us. Don’t take our days for granted, misuse or waste time. Live each moment almost as if it were our last: ‘ Celebrate this Mass like it was your First Mass and as if it were going to be your last. ’
