HOMILY FOR SUNDAY AUGUST 7 2022

This is the 19th Sunday in ordinary time. Faith is a supernatural gift from God which enables us to believe without doubting whatever God has revealed. Only the believing mind would accept this as a fact. But most people doubt the existence of God. They have no faith because they live in darkness. It was faith that led Abraham to become the father of many. Isaac and Jacob also believed and God made them our ancestors in faith (cf.Wis.18:6-9). Their faith including that of Sarah, never misled them because God does not change.

Strong faith in God helps us to focus our minds in heaven. This is because, “only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for” (Heb. 11:1-2ff). Faith does not deceive. Only the things of this passing world can deceive because they do not belong to the spiritual realm. The amassing of earthly wealth by some world leaders is but a waste. Like Cain, most people kill others for the sake of earthly things. There are some others who betray the innocent for the sake of getting rich. This ill-gotten wealth does not last. Rather, it keeps the owner restless. The smallest noise at night keeps the wealthy person sleepless and makes the blood pressure to go high. They die in silence and are buried in shame.

Faith opens our minds to know that our eternal homeland is not in this world. Our real homeland is heaven. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob realized that “they were only strangers and nomads on earth.” This shows us that we too are sojourners on this earth. Our hearts should be set on the things that last forever. This is why Jesus assures his faithful: “There is no need to be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased your father to give you the kingdom” (Lk. 12:32-48). This kingdom is where our treasure should be stored. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” May God increase the little faith we have which is our treasure, amen. Happy Sunday.
