This doesn’t also mean that bad things do not happen to good people. Rather, a lot of good people suffer a lot. In short majority of good people are suffering.

HOMILY FOR THE 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: “By the OBEDIENCE of one man…” (Rom 5:19)

By: Fr. Justus

(a) The Fall of man came through disobedience. The Satan, the crafty serpent, tempted the obedience of man to the instruction of God, beginning with Eve; “if you eat from this tree, your eyes will be opened”. She ate it and gave to the man in disobedience. There eyes truely opened, and they saw how naked they have become, unclothed and stripped of Grace and Glory of God and susceptible to dangers and evil.

(b) The problem here is not lack of the fundamental knowledge and awareness; for Adam and Eve knew and were aware of what God had said; that “they should not eat from the tree”. And Eve related that too to the serpent. She had the knowledge already. The discussion on obedience and disobedience is only possible when there is knowledge and awareness. Adam and Eve chose to disobey, which caused them suffering and calamity.

(c) Like Adam and Eve, Jesus too had knowledge and awareness of what God wants and like Eve, He answered the Satan in the 3 temptations beginning with; “for it is written…” Adam and Eve know what was written but disobeyed. Jesus expressed what was written and obeyed them. St Paul then writes; “through the obedience of one man, many will be justified” (Rom.5:19). Already by age of 7, every normal human person already has this fundamental knowledge of what is good and what is evil. “…For it is written” in our hearts. By disobedience we enter into trouble, nakedness, disgrace and shame. By obedience, we enter into glory and save many. Be obedient, there is no other way.
