HOMILY FOR THE 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: “MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE”

This is the 1st Sunday of Lent. We already celebrated Ash Wednesday that marks the beginning of the season. The ashes on our foreheads may not have dried up or faded away. It must have made an indelible mark in our hearts to remind us of our duties during this period of grace. The first reading recapitulates the creation and fall of our first parents, Adam and Eve. It sounds ridiculous that the serpent deceived the woman. “Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘No! You will not die! God knows in fact that on the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 2:7-9. 3:1-7).

This eagerness to be like gods and to know good and evil brought the fall of the human person. The quest for material things leads to avarice. The clamor for fame leads to war. While bigotry leads to idle worship. Any act of disobedience to the Word of God leads to a great fall. This is why the sin of Adam affected all humanity. But a new Adam came to save everyone from death. “Again, one man’s fall brought condemnation on everyone, so the good act of one man brings everyone life and makes them justified”(Rom. 5:12-19).

Jesus Christ is the new Adam who resisted and conquered the devil. After fasting for forty days and nights the evil one came to tempt the author of life. Asking him to change stone into bread. The devil even quoted the scriptures! But the Master told him what Scripture says: “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”(Mtt. 4:1-11). Let us be obedient to the word of God. This time of Lent is meant for our self-discipline. Let us eschew bodily pleasures and uplift our spiritaul lives. Let all do the right thing and we shall live. Happy sunday to everyone.
