HOMILY: Gospel: Lk 12:49-53
‘Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. ’ My friends, these words seem unlike the Jesus we believe in, so what’s going on? What does he mean?

The one major desire all of us have is to be happy – that is to be at peace in ourselves. Our faith helps us to achieve this which requires a good informed conscience with continual education and reflection. Sometimes people will take issue with what we believe to be right, just as they did in Jesus’ time. For example, Jesus taught us about the uniqueness and hence the inalienable rights of each person from the moment of conception and God’s designs for the human person with regard to relationships and marriage. Both of these fundamental understandings of the human person are now very much at odds with our prevailing culture. As a result of these fundamental differences between people, the members of families can be divided. The faithful followers of Jesus are a thorn in the side of many in our society, so scorn, ridicule and silencing is the response, as with the prophet Jeremiah in our First Reading.

Jesus desires us to be reconciled and at peace with those around us and especially with those in our family, but we cannot do so by sacrificing our principals for what we consider to be true human values and the right ordering of society. This is the fire Jesus is referring to in our Gospel – that of authentic truth and justice. My friends in many situations of our contemporary culture we’ll just have to agree to differ while continuing to love, support and encourage those around us.
