HOMILY FOR THE 22ND THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “PUT OUT INTO DEEP WATER…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Corinthians 3:18-23, Ps. 24:1-6, Luke 5:1-11
St. Luke puts the call of Peter in the context of ancient divine calls like those of Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah and others. Like St. Peter, all disciples are responding to God’s call in their respective vocations, whether as priests, religious, married people or people in single state, dedicated to chastity.

All are called to holiness and obedience to the voice of the Master. Peter’s experience teaches us that God meets us where we are, unworthy as we have been, and transforms us into his instruments, so that others, wherever they are, without discrimination, may be brought to God through us; that God may also transform their lives. Like Peter, acknowledging our sinfulness before God is the first step in the response to the call to discipleship. Also, sometimes, in order that we might see the hand of God working in our lives, we must “put into deep waters.” We must never give up on our search and listen the Lord, even when the voice that is speaking us does not make sense. Afterall, it didn’t make sense that a simple street preacher was asking Peter, a professional fisherman, who worked those waters day and night, to put out the nets again, after Peter and his companions had worked all night. But, check out the results: great things happen when God mixes with humans and in vain does the builder labor, who builds without the Lord (Psalm 127:1). Greater things happen when we realize that faith only takes us beyond the limits of human capacity; beyond the last drop of blood; beyond the limits of possibility; and beyond even death. To each plan, project and endeavor that you conceive, include a prayer and certainly plan to have the Lord on board with you. That is the only way success is guaranteed. Also, St. Paul advices us once more to shun envy, jealousy, quarrels, division, tribalism, clique-ism, and the many divisive and selfish tendencies that tear our communities, churches and families apart.
Lord, give me the grace to be a faithful missionary disciple; and to be a bridge builder, who brings people together, and to you. Amen.
