HOMILY FOR THE 22ND TUESDAY ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: THE POWER OF JESUS

Introduction
Good morning my dear beloved brothers and sisters,
Today’s readings give us two important messages: Jesus’ special power and our need to be ready for him.
The Power of Jesus
In the Gospel, Jesus is teaching in a synagogue. The people are amazed. Unlike other teachers who just repeated old lessons, Jesus spoke with his own special kind of power. His words weren’t just talk; they were full of God’s authority.
We see this right away when a man with an evil spirit cries out. Jesus simply tells the spirit to leave, and it obeys him immediately. The people are shocked. They have seen Jesus’ words in action. He doesn’t just talk about God’s power—He uses it to change things.

Our Call to Be Ready
In our first reading, St. Paul talks about the day Jesus will come again. He says it will be sudden, like a thief in the night. Paul is not trying to scare us, but to remind us to be prepared.
He says we are not “children of darkness” but “children of light.” This means we shouldn’t be spiritually asleep or unaware. We are called to be awake, sober, and ready. Living as a child of the light means we live with purpose and a clear mind, trusting in Jesus.
How Both Readings Work Together
So, what do these two readings tell us? Jesus’ power gives us the reason to be ready. Because we know he is real and his words have power, we can live with that same faith and purpose.
Being ready is not a lonely job. We are called to “encourage one another and build one another up.” We must help each other stay close to Jesus and live as children of the light, so that we can show the world what it looks like to follow him.
