HOMILY THEME: THE HEALING POWER OF JESUS
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
Col 1:1-8; Psalm 51(52):10-11; Luke 4:38-44
Today, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church. As Pope, he governed the Church from 590-604. England owes her conversion to him, as he sent fellow monks to evanglize England; protected a lot during the babarian invasion of Europe, as well as watching over the holiness of the clergy and preserved ecclesiastical discipline. To him, the liturgy owes several of its finest prayers, and the name “Gregorian chant” recalls this great Pope’s work in the development of the Church’s chant. His commentaries on Holy Scripture exercised a considerable influence on Christian thought, particularly in the Middle Ages. Together with St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, he is one of the four great doctors of the Latin Church.

The most important thing that humanity needs is “Truth.” Truth, like the Gospel messages is not always palatable, but when accepted, brings freedom. Jesus, the Truth, Who was anointed to bring good news and to set free, continues His ministry in today’s gospel (Luke 4: 38-44) as He responds to Simon’s invitation to his home and sets his mother-in-law free from the bondage of sickness. Jesus, after setting many others free, reminded the people that He needs to move on to other places, for His mission is to set the world ablaze with the fire of liberation – Truth.
St. Paul at the beginning of his letter to the Colossians (Col. 1: 1-8) appreciates their response to the Gospel message as preached not by himself, but by one of their own, Epaphras, who has now joined him and Timothy as a servant-minister of the Gospel.
Dear friends, this liberating fire of the Gospel message is still the same today, active and alive. We are all called to be instruments and channels of transmitting this truth that liberates. Have I ever made myself available as an instrument to set someone in need free? Have I given a helping hand to lift someone from darkness into light, either spiritual, intellectual, emotional, psychological, physical or financial, etc?
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will follow the footsteps of Christ, Who went about doing good. “A candle is only useful when it can give light.” May we as the light of the world (Matt. 5: 14), light up the world with the Truth that sets free. Be the help that someone needs today. Have a Happy and Truth-full day!
