THEME: “WHERE TWO OR THREE MEET IN MY NAME, I SHALL BE THERE WITH THEM ”

This is the 23rd Sunday in ordinary time (Yr.A). Christ is the head of the body, the Church. As members of Christ’s body, the faithful gather in the Church for prayer and adoration. This gathering builds up into the community of believers. This community is made up of saints and sinners alike. The uniting force of this community is love of God and neighbor. Where there is love there is God. This is why Jesus says. “Where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them” (Mtt. 18:15-20). But where people gather without love, Jesus cannot be there with them.

For this reason, Jesus appointed the apostles to be leaders of this community that gathers in his name. As representatives of Christ, the apostles shall teach this community what Christ has commanded them. That is, to to love one another. The apostles shall also correct those members of the community who are going astray. This task of correcting the straying members of the community was also given to the prophet Ezekiel who says: “The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows, son of man, I have appointed you as sentry to the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, warn them in my name”(Ezk. 33:7-9). That is, warn them to love one another.

Therefore, if the prophet fails to correct the evil ways of the people entrusted to his care, he shall answer for their death. But if he warns them, the guilt shall be on the sinner. The prophet should correct the people with the love of God. In our time we have bishops and priests who look after the faithful . They should shepherd and correct them with love. This is why Paul says: “If you love your fellow men you have carried out your obligation” (Rom. 13:8-10). Hence, love your neighbor as yourself is the second greatest commandment. May the members of the Church love one another with sincere hearts, amen. Happy Sunday.
