HOMILY FOR THE 23RD THURSDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
Bishop Gerald M. Musa
1 Cor 8:1b-7, 11-13 (Gal 4:4-7); Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14, 23-24; Luke 6:27-38 (1:39-47)
Today, many of us suffer from a killer disease that some commentators call “grudgititis,” caused by holding too many grudges and keeping a multitude of enemies. An African proverb teaches us how to tackle our enemies: “If you are digging a pit for your enemy, don’t make it too deep, for you may fall into it.” When Saul pursued David with three thousand men, Abishai, David’s army commander, had the opportunity to kill Saul, but David stopped him. King David gave practical examples of love, forgiveness, and compassion.

Jesus changed the world with His revolutionary teaching about loving enemies. He challenged a prevailing culture of vengeance and hatred. Jesus said to His disciples, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also” (Luke 6:27-28).
How possible is it to love bandits and kidnappers in Nigeria who are determined to steal, kill, and destroy us? It is hard to show love, kindness, and compassion to people who vilify us, say unkind things about us, wish us harm, oppose us, work against our progress, or outright dislike us. What attitudes do we put up towards our enemies and those who humiliate us?
