HOMILY FOR THE 24TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: FAITH IN THE STRANGEST PLACES!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
1 Cor 11:17-26, 33; Psalm 39(40):7-10, 17; Luke 7:1-10
Wealth seems to naturally displace humility and faith. The one who wields so much power and authority seldom sees the need to be humble or have any serious relationship with God. But today, we see the complete opposite. A Roman centurion, in charge of a hundred soldiers, displays exceptional faith and humility. He was so kind hearted that the Jews who naturally hated the Romans found a way to love him. They even recommended him to Jesus. Love and compassion come before tribal sentiments.

Friends, we can be so carried away with selfish interests that we begin to create factions in Church, even during ceremonies of the Lord’s Supper, as the Corinthians did in the first reading. But the persecution and martyrdom of Cornelius and Cyprian remind us that faith in God, and our love for another are worth dying for. During the Decian persecution, Cornelius and Cyprian argued that Christians who rejected the faith should be welcomed back after serving penance. They sought to gather, rather than scatter. Cornelius was exiled under Emperor Gallus in 253 AD, and died in exile, while Cyprian was martyred under Emperor Valerian in 258 AD. Their lives and manner of death led many back to the faith.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, with a grateful heart for a new day, I pray that my actions toward You and my neighbour today may not be with evil intent or malice, but that I may so believe in you, that others may come to know you. Amen.
God bless your week ahead. Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for us.
