Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, known as Francis of Assisi, was an Italian mystic, poet, and Catholic religious figure who lived from around 1181 until October 3, 1226. He founded the Franciscan monastic order and was motivated to live a pious and itinerant Christian life, ultimately becoming a beggar and traveling preacher.

St. Francis exemplified deep and overflowing humility. According to St. Bonaventure, he was acutely aware of his sinfulness and always sought to see himself in relation to God’s magnificence.
St. Francis believed that seeking praise from others could lead to “vain boasting,” which only produces fleeting feelings of satisfaction and distracts from true happiness that comes solely from God. Consequently, he kept the gifts bestowed upon him by the Lord private in his heart, refraining from boasting about his many blessings.
To nurture his humility, he would remind himself, “Francis, if a robber had received such graces as you have received, he would be far more grateful than you.” Recognizing our own inadequacy in gratitude can inspire us to appreciate what we have received, which is nothing less than what God deserves.
In today’s world, practicing humility and obedience can be quite challenging.
Today, let us reflect on how St. Francis modeled Jesus’s obedience and humility throughout His Passion and death. Consider how we might embody these virtues in gratitude for what Jesus endured for us. In humility, St. Francis rejoiced in suffering and prayed, like St. Paul, to know Christ and the power of His resurrection by participating in His sufferings and becoming like Him in His death (cf. Phil 3:10).
God bless you.
