HOMILY FOR THE 26TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: SPIRIT OF TOLERANCE

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

Job 1:6-22; Psalm 16(17):1-3, 6-7; Luke 9:46-50

Roman Emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius wrote an influential work titled Meditations, where he reflected on responsibilities, obligations, humility, and more. One of his striking statements is: “All men are made one for another: either then teach them better or bear with them.” This highlights how interconnected we are as human beings and the importance of cooperation.

However, in today’s world, competition often overshadows cooperation. A brief exchange between John and Jesus sheds light on the spirit of tolerance. John said, “Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.” Jesus responded, “Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you” (Luke 9:49-50).

This teaches that people from different backgrounds, races, religions, and denominations can unite against evil. Unity is strength. How do we view those who work similarly to us or in a different way? Are they collaborators or competitors? If politicians from opposing parties consider themselves opponents, shouldn’t those working in God’s vineyard see themselves as cooperators?
