HOMILY FOR THE 26TH MONDAY ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: FIRST THINGS FIRST!

BY: Fr. Kevin Oselumhense Anetor

Job 1:6-22; Psalm 16(17):1-3, 6-7; Luke 9:46-50

I woke up one morning to a post on WhatsApp of how Amazon became very successful, while Toys R Us went bankrupt. Explaining the principle of their success, Amazon emphasised ‘putting the customer first,’ invention’, and ‘patience.’ In the practice of our faith this would readily translate to ‘putting God first’, ‘creativity with our talents’ and ‘patience’. Job understood this thoroughly. Toys R Us failed because they put themselves first, they lacked courage to be creative, and they were impatient.

In the gospel reading of today, Jesus says that if we must truly be great, we must put everyone else first, and make ourselves least. This divine principle is also how businesses grow. It is the fundamental principle of service and discipleship. Again, we must not dissuade anyone from spreading the true Gospel of Christ, for anyone who isn’t against us, is for us. St Jerome understood this principle. He put God first by denying the world and choosing asceticism. He was so generous with his talents, that he translated the entire Greek Bible to Latin, and went further to write many commentaries. One of his most famous quotes include’ ‘ignorance of scripture is ignorance of God.’

God bless your week ahead. St Jerome, pray for us.
