HOMILY FOR THE 28TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ.”

Romans 1:1-7, Ps. 98:1-4, Luke 11:29-32

Today, we start reading Paul’s Letter to the Romans, Paul’s longest and the most beautifully written of his letters. Please find time to read all 16 chapters meditatively this week. In today’s introduction to this letter to a Gentile community (probably mixed with Jewish Christians), to whom Paul never preached the gospel previously, he assured them that they were invited through the obedience of faith to be part of God’s Kingdom, in Christ Jesus.

Christ extends the same invitation us daily. No one is deserving or entitled. That invitation is a gift of grace from the God, who constantly seeks our salvation. For, as we proclaim in today’s Psalm, “The Lord has made known his salvation,” and that is in Christ Jesus, the Eternal Word of God. Christ and the Good News he preached are one; to embrace his message is to embrace him. As we read the letter to the Romans, may God’s grace and peace find a home in us and may our response in the obedience of faith be whole and firm. In the gospel, the first beneficiaries of the good news are called a wicked generation because of their lack of faith in the Messiah; they were hardhearted and did not embrace the gospel. At the time that Luke penned this message down, people still probably had no faith in the risen Christ. The resurrection is God’s greatest sign to us of who Jesus was and is. We must remain open to the good news of the resurrection despite the difficulty we sometimes experience in grasping matters of faith. It is in wholly believing and embracing God’s word that God brings us to understanding. With such faithful commitment, we would not be afraid of the Last Day when the Son of Man rises in judgment; because we know that he would welcome us into his Kingdom.
