HOMILY FOR THE 28TH WEDNESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: THE EVIL OF SELF-INDULGENCE!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Gal 5:18-25; Psalm 1:1-4, 6; Luke 11:42-46
Self-indulgence is very much akin to selfishness. It involves not denying the self of anything it wants. It’s about an attitude of ‘when I’m hungry, I must eat, when I’m thirsty, I must drink…’ St Paul reminds us that self indulgence can only lead to vices like fornication, gross indecency, sexual irresponsibility, idolatry and sorcery; fighting and jealousy, envy, drunkenness and the likes…

Friends, the Spirit engenders love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self control. Selflessness rather than selfishness should rule us. We cannot continue with our Pharisaic attitude of doing only ‘public good’ because of the praise we’ll get for it. If we must demand that others act right, we must be willing to lead by example. We pray that the spirit of God may lead us to put to death, whatever binds us to selfishness and self-indulgence, Amen.
God bless your day ahead.
