HOMILY FOR THE 2ND FRIDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28, Psalm 104:16-21, Matthew 21:33-43,45-46

The parable of the Wicked Tenants evokes the Joseph typology in today’s liturgy. Out of hatred and envy, Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. God turned his fortunes around and used him as an instrument to save the entire family of Jacob, including those who betrayed him. Centuries later, Israel’s leaders played out the script of God’s saving love for humanity, by rejecting, betraying and handing Jesus over to be crucified; again unjustly.

God raised him from the dead and thereby made the gift of eternal life available to all peoples. Jealousy, envy, injustice, betrayal, hatred and the rejection of truth still destroy people today. Lent gives us an opportunity to shun these vices in our individual and communal lives. When we know situations where such unjust acts hurt others, we must not stand by aloof; we are under obligation to act decisively to stop the evil. Where we find ourselves on the receiving end of such injustice, let us remember God’s redemptive and wonderful deeds of the past, as the Psalm reminds us, and put absolute trust in God to fight our battles for us, so our sufferings may yield wonderful and life-saving outcomes.

Lord, be our refuge and strength in adversity. Amen.
