THEME: We are all Witnesses.

BY: Fr Anthony C Ohaekwusi.

I saw the kerosene lamp I used in high school, covered in dust from lack of use. I remembered how important it was to me at the time, as I used it to study at night. Due to the lack of constant electricity, the kerosene lamp was one of the most valuable properties. When rechargeable electric lanterns were introduced, oil lamps were abandoned in favour of more convenient and efficient technology. Many other technologies have come and gone, but one thing is common to them all: they were all employed to bring light into the darkness, each in its capacity. Light is the reason we have lamps, and where there is light, there is no need for lamps. It is the light that makes the lamp relevant.

RELATED: HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

The readings of this Sunday emphasise that we are all witnesses in the lives we lead. This is because in every experience we are to prove ourselves worthy of the essence of our being. God has made us His stewards so that we excel in doing His will. But more than servants, we have been made lights to shine in the world and show the way to others.

We should remember that this light is not ours. Rather, it is God Himself who is the light, and we only carry His light. Just as a candle carries light and cannot claim to be the light, neither can we as bearers of God’s light claim to be the light. So our light matters when God’s glory shines through what we do.

Learn from John the Baptist. He humbly and boldly claimed that he was not the Messiah, and then pointed to the true Lamb of God, for whom he came to bear witness. We, too, in everything we do, especially in our professions and exalted duties, should always act as pointers to the light. And we can only do this by using every situation to bear witness to God’s glory in the world. In this way we reveal our usefulness, and the light will continue to shine in us. We are only servants and light-bearers who make God’s light shine by doing His will. This light does not shine for itself, it shines for others.

Remain lifted and do have a great Sunday.
