HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR B (DEC. 10TH, 2023)

THEME: SPIRITUAL ROAD WORKS

BY: Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

Is 40:1-5, 9-11
Ps 85:9-14
2Pt 3:8-14
Mk 1:1-8

Each day draws us closer to the coming of the Lord. On the second Sunday, the loving Lord tells us how not to miss his precious presence and company. He sends messengers who warn and instruct us for our good.

The catch word is ‘repent’. We are invited to change the direction of our minds. Isaiah and John the Baptist call us to prepare the way for the Lord. We are to retreat, go back to our initial love and initial calling. We are to rethink our faith and commitment.

As a guide, our readings give us two words to aid our process of repentance. They are, ‘valleys and mountains’. I can see two main causes of sin: arrogance (call it pride) and fear. Both results from ignorance. When wrong knowledge piles up, the mountain arrogance sets in. When ignorance increases, the valley of fear is created.

With the tool of Divine instructions, we get to know our nature, God’s will and the gap. Wisely admitting the state of affairs, we open up to grace and experience the gentle and transforming touch of grace. Self examination based on God’s Word is the call for us today. Proper examination will help us prepare the way for the Lord. We pray for the humility and courage to do that.

PRAYER POINTS
~For Divine insight needed to repent ~That we will boldly admit our waywardness
~For the humility to turn back to God
