HOMILY  FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: “STAND UP, HE SAID, DO NOT BE AFRAID”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu.

This is the 2nd Sunday of Lent. The only thing in this life that is constant is “change.” One of the renowned philosophers said: “You cannot step into the same flowing water twice.” This is why we are always on the move. Even our father in faith, Abram (Later, Abraham) was on the move. “The Lord said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your family and your father’s house, for the land l will show you” (Gen. 12:1-4). This instruction to always be on the move brings positive change. An Igbo adage says, “No one harvests big mushrooms while seated at a place.” This means, you must move around the bush path to get the best mushrooms. One who sits permanently at a place and does not move out is stagnant and suffers senile decay.

As we move forward we behold new sights, meet new friends and encounter cultural change. It is said that, ‘the child who goes out often, learns faster than the old man who sits at home. In this sense, we believe in “forward ever, backward never!” This forward movement leads to a positive change that transforms us through the grace of God. Paul tells Timothy that, “This grace had already been granted us , in Christ Jesus, before the beginning of time ” (2Tim. 1:8-10).

On the contrary, many nations refuse this positive change. They refuse to move forward and embrace new changes. They would rather prefer the stagnant water that never flows out. They forget that Jesus welcomes new changes. He himself was transfigured. His transfiguration on the high mountain ushered the disciples into a new horizon. “There in their presence he was transfigured, his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light” (Mtt. 17:1-9). They saw Moses and Elijah! They heard the voice of God coming from the bright cloud saying: “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.” Peter was overwhelmed by the sight and exclaimed: “Lord, it is wonderful for us to be here.” They could not stand the sight, but Jesus encouraged them saying, “Stand up, do not be afraid!” Let us stand firm and face the challenges of our faith. Let us not be afraid to welcome new ideas and positive changes. Happy sunday.
