HOMILY FOR THE 34TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: The enthronement of righteousness with the coming of the Son of Man.

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Rev.18: 1-2.21-23; 19:1-3.9a; Lk 21:20-28

The scary images signalling the eschaton continue to trail the readings of today. Like others, there is an element of hope whereby the readings speak of the dethroning of agents of oppression and enthronement of liberation.

In the first reading (Rev 18: 1-2, 21-23, 19: 1-3, 9), we hear of the fall of Babylon the Great. It is the pulling down of the seating authority that oppresses the faithful of God. The consequences of her lifestyle have befallen her and never shall there be rejoicing in her. However, the restoration of the joy of the “elect” is immanent as “they are invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb” (Rev 19: 9). Hopefully, you are among those responding adequately to the invitation.

In the gospel (Luke 21: 20-28), Jesus Christ instructs about the impending destruction of the Holy City of Jerusalem. All these come as a consequence of the filth going on in the dwelling city of God. Like the first reading, the enthronement of righteousness with the coming of the Son of Man brings liberation.

Dear friends, at creation God crowned humanity with the gift of His image and likeness. This participation was truncated by the fall (Gen. 3); however, the Incarnation of the Eternal Word, Jesus Christ, restored this innocence and glory. I ask myself: Am I still at the moment living in the glory of redemption or have I lost that innocence by my life of injustice, immorality, greed, unforgiveness and the like? Do I seat on the throne of oppression?

I pray as we journey in life today, we will be conscious of the consequences of drifting away from the life of righteousness. May we look unto the Lamb that was slain and have a change of heart and attitude. May the liberating power of the Son of Man free us from the dominion of sin. Have a victorious-full day!
