YEAR C: HOMILY/REFLECTION FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER

One of the worst mistakes people make is to have the notion that they can do without God. They have time for everything except for God. A lot of failures come from the fact that many are running pretty well but outside the track. As such, they may take the first position but for no prize at all. It was not a mere co-incidence that the all-through-the night toiling of Peter and his men was futile until Jesus came. I have a feeling today that we are called to reflect why “it has not worked out”. Why is that marriage not working out? Why is that business standing still? Why have I recorded series of failures in those exams despite all my efforts?

I am not intending to say that it always happens that any time we fail; it is as a result of our keeping a distance from God. What I say is that we check it out properly to see if we are in any way reluctant to “pay in the net” at His command. There are issues here. Peter obeyed the Lord’s commend and became successful. How many times have we opened the scriptures to know what He has commanded, much more obeying it? How many times have we missed going to church on Sundays because we run after our business schemes? We are too busy, would always be the answer. One of the Psalms that inspires me is Psalm 127:1-2 –

In vain the laborers toil;
If the Lord does not guard the city,
In vain the watchmen keep awake.
In vain is your earlier rising,
In vain is your going to bed late…”

If we must not Labour in vain, we must not fail to give the Lord an opportunity to come into our affairs. We must seek to know what He has commanded; and we must be ready to obey His commands.
