THEME: Remember Massah and Meribah.

BY: Fr. Justus Oruma.

(a) At Massah and Meribah, the people of Israel complained, grumbled, were filled with bitterness, murmured and quarrelled about everything, even for the smallest thing that does not worth it. Massah and Meribah describes a life situation bereft of God who is the source of the last and ultimate satisfaction of man. Notice the question of the Israelites over this ugly situation: “Is God still in our midst or not?” A life empty of God is “Massah and Meribah”; characterized with- murmuring, complaining, nagging, ungratefulness and is never satisfied.

(b) The Samaritan woman had 5 men already but still unsatisfied, even the one she had at the time she was speaking with Jesus was still not her husband. This is a Massah and Meribah case. But she expressed her desire to be once and for all satisfied. Christ would give her the living water with will ever well in her life and will be ever satisfying. 1 Cor. 10:4 described Christ as that Rock following with water which satisfied the people at Massah and Meribah. As Moses struck the rock and water gushed out which satisfied the people at Massah and Meribah, so did the soldier pierce the SIDE of Christ and the living and satisfying water gushed out.

(c) By the “SIDE” of Christ is the satisfaction of the soul of man. Therefore, walking “side” by “side” with Christ, we gain the satisfaction which the world and accumulation of materials cannot offer. The soul of man will ever thirst and yearn for God who completes and fulfills his life. “My soul is thirsting for the Lord” (Psalm 42). Sometimes the desires of the soul of man are distracted and perverted. Most times, man keeps amassing and seeking only material satisfactions which leaves him only craving for more without end. “Is God still in our midst or not? May Massah and Meribah never describe your life.
