HOMILY FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF LENT – YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: GET RIGHT WITH GOD.

BY: Fr. Emmanuel David Konyeaso

HOMILY: “Unless you repent, you will likewise perish” (Luke 13:1-9).

This powerful but urgent statement of Jesus is a dire necessity for all. To this, Jesus wants us: GET RIGHT WITH GOD. The modern world seems to forget or ignore this but focuses more on God’s love. But the same Jesus that preaches the Gospel of God’s love, also preaches the Gospel of repentance. The same Jesus that forgave the adulterous woman, also tells her to repent. And even, in today’s Gospel, Jesus mentions it 2 times, which shows its importance. – Even so, to the cities that refused to repent, Jesus denounced them with a pitiable sorrow: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida” (Luke 10:13). This was because they rejected God’s invitation.

  • The disciples of Christ, having received the mandate of their mission, “went out and preached that people should repent” (Luke 6:12).
  • In today’s modern world, the message of repentance is almost gone and completely fizzling out. We applause someone with a sign that says “God loves you,” but loathe and despise another with a sign that says “REPENT.” We hate to hear this word ‘Repent’ but the Rich man, in his place of torment (Luke 16:23) begged Abraham to send Lazarus to his father’s house to WARN his brothers to repent, “lest they too come to this place of torment.”
  • More to this is that, the modern society, evolutionists, humanists, liberal theologians, New Agers etc now think and preach that Christianity, the Bible, Family, Marriage, Human Life, Morality which have absolute truths are old-fashioned and obsolete. These truths should either be reworded, changed or dealt away with. They propose that these truths have no more impact on the political, religious and moral conscience and decisions of the society. This is fallacious. Now, you know why Jesus says “Unless you repent, you will likewise perish.”
  • In this season of Lent, the Lord Jesus again, invites us to consider our ways (Hosea 1:5) and get right with God. Repentance is not an event, it’s a lifestyle. May God give us the grace, the insight, the ability to recognize our true identity, our kingdom ID and our spiritual DNA.
