HOMILY FOR THE 4TH SUNDAY IN EASTER (GOODNESS SHEPHERD SUNDAY): YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: KNOWING, CHOOSING AND FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD
BY: Fr. Isaac Awe
Acts 13:14,43-52; Rev.7:9,14-17; John 10:27-30
The sheep that belong to me, listen to me!
QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED MEDITATIVELY :
Are we sheep or goats?
Who is our shepherd!
Where do we belong?
Are we in an environment to be guided?
Are we ready and willing to listen to the good shepherd?
WHY DO WE NEED A SHEPHERD?
We need the shepherd because we are prone to wander. Jesus leads us back into the fold.
We need the shepherd because we can not find our way back by ourselves. Jesus restores us to full fellowship with God.
We need the shepherd because he knows the way. Jesus can show us the way.
We are still very much defenceless in the world and in need of guidance. Every generation needs the water of life, and must be led to it. Therefore, if we are given the option of knowing either psalm 23 or the shepherd, let us be smart to choose the shepherd because some of us are having the bible but unfortunately not living the bible. May God help us. Amen!

The security Jesus offers is an abiding relationship with the living God, and membership with his flock, the people of God. Jesus also promises the security of peace and protection from evil and the greatest harm that could befall us — eternal destruction. The Lord does not spare us from all trouble. In this life we will experience pain, suffering, sickness, and death. But through these the Lord will lead us to ultimate victory and safety in his everlasting home. Even in the midst of our sufferings we can find a peace and security which no one can give except God alone. We can confidently follow the Lord wherever he leads, trusting that nothing can keep us from God if we trust in him. Have we placed our lives securely in God where it belongs?
In a nutshell, there are three functions of a shepherd: Protecting the sheep; Guiding them in the right direction and Supplying their needs . But to be beneficiaries of these, we must put the following into consideration:
God must and should be placed above all things through love.
We must strive to attain the holiness of life even in a polluted and contaminated world.
Our faith must be well kept even in the midst of life’s challenges.
Reflection: Today being the vocation Sunday, how effective and committed are we in our different vocations?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd. In you we place all our hope and we entrust ourselves to you completely. Increase our confidence in your saving grace and in your abiding presence. Amen.
