HOMILY FOR THE 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT (LAETARE SUNDAY)— YEAR A 

HOMILY THEME: THE BLIND HEARTS

1 Sam 16:1b,6-7,10-13a/2 Eph 5:8-14/John 9:1-41

(a) The Fourth of Lent is called the Laetare Sunday. Laetare is the Latin word, which means “rejoice”. We are called to rejoice because the Easter light is near and it’s warm is already felt as written in Isaiah; ” arise, rejoice for your Light has come”. The coming of Light brings joy and drives out powers of darkness and false teachings

(b) Jesus healed a man born blind. He could now see because the Light has come to him. We could see only because there is Light. In absence of Light no one sees. Christ shaded His Light on the man born blind and became the Light, not only of his eyes but more of his heart. Thus, with the opening of the eyes of his heart, he was enlightened and had the greatest knowledge, which is to know and witness that Jesus is the Messiah. In the story, we could see the uneducated and born blind instructing the pharisees who were actually blind in their hearts. The enlightenment of the heart is not a thing of the classroom and erudition but a knowledge by witness and testimony.

(b) The “sight” of the heart is greater than the “sight” of the eyes for the heart is the innermost subjective and personal part of man. That is why God concentrates in the heart of man and does not see as we see. We are children of light and are called (as St. Paul writes) to shine and bring forth the fruits of the light and witnessing to the truth which dispels every darkness and falsity. We need Christ to shade his Light in our hearts that we may see. Today, there are many false teachers. The healed man could not be confused because he had encountered the Light which enlightened his heart and was sure that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. We need this witnessing. May the Light of His Face shine upon you and bring you joy.
