HOMILY FOR THE 5TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: YOU CAN’T HIDE GOODNESS
BY: Fr. Paul Karabari
Genesis 1:1-19, Ps 103:1-2,5-6,10,12,24,35, Mark 6:53-56
‘..immediately the people recognized him, and ran about the whole neighbourhood and began to bring sick people.’
One remarkable action in the creation narrative is God separating light from darkness (Gen. 1:1-19). Jesus continued His work of bringing light into the darkest valleys of men and women in the Gospel (Mark 6:53-56).

As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, the Bible says, “the people recognized him, and ran about the whole neighbourhood and began to bring sick people on their pallets to the place where they heard he was.” The picture is at once awful and wonderful. It is awful in that dozens or even hundreds of pitiful people converge on one place, seeking Jesus’ help. It is wonderful in that the faithful devotion of people who spare no effort to help their loved ones, and wonderful in that all who touched even the fringe of Jesus’ cloak were healed.
One way we can relate with the people around us is to show clearly what we can do and what we can not for them. The people rushed out with the sick ones to Jesus because they knew what He would do for them. Moreover, He did not have for them empty platitudes or mere sympathy. He possessed inherent, effectual, authoritative power. He could do what they asked of Him and more.
Goodness can not be hidden. People recognize it when they see it. It is true we can not do everything in life. However, we must do that which we are capable of doing to provide solutions to human afflictions. Jesus would never run away from doing good even to the most undeserving people.
Note that in large measure, these sick people did not come on their own. They couldn’t; they were too weak or paralyzed or comatose. While this is not an exact parallel to salvation or blessing, it is most instructive that sometimes, God works in people’s lives because someone else persisted in presenting them to Him. There are people who are willing to help and be used. Most times, the credit is not even given to them. That shouldn’t be their interest since God sees and knows everything.
Jesus is the same today. In the furtherance of His kingdom, He can do anything. He can save any sinner, answer any prayer, overcome any problem, heal any hurt, grant any blessing for your delight, and His glory. He is able. Our presence should bring healing to the hurt in our midst. Unfortunately, we hurt them even more. Anywhere we are, if our presence is not providing solutions, then we have not lived. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God bless you and your household always through Christ Our Lord Amen. You are always remembered in our prayers.
