HOMILY FOR SUNDAY MAY 15 2022

This is the 5th Sunday of Easter. A new commandment is given to us by Our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the commandment to love and to be loved. This new commandment ushers in a new heaven and a new earth as attested to by John (cf. Apoc. 21:1-5). It means that love makes everything new.

When we love one another we collaborate with God to renew the face of the earth. We bring down the reign of God on earth when we love. This idea of loving one another is not just a question of lip service but real lived experience. It brings about mutual trust, cordial friendship and peaceful collaboration among nations. “I give you a new commandment, love one another” (13;31-35).

Paul and Barnabas put new heart into the disciples by showing them love (Acts 14:21-27). Jesus gave his life for us out of love. God is love and those who follow him must love one another. By the love we show to one another we become through children of God. Where there is love there God is found. Open your heart and receive the new commandment to love. Happy Sunday.
