HOMILY FOR THE 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died”.

BY: Fr. Justus Oruma

(a) This statement made by Martha means that the presence of Jesus Christ gives life. Jesus himself says, “I am the Life”. They are truly dead in the spirit, those who have no spirit of God in them, brought by the present of Christ. In Romans 8, St. Paul says, if the Spirit of God dwells in you, you will live. True, Lazarus would not have died if Christ had been there.

(b) Now Christ is present. For Martha, it is too late. 4 days have already gone. He has decayed. The situation is hopeless. Dead is killer of every future and hope. In dead everything is lost. In dead all hope is lost. But the presence of Christ can still change the situation. The grave was opened and he called the dead man out, bring him back and restoring all annihilated by dead, a fulfillment of what is read in Ezekiel,- I will open your graves and restore you in your land.

(c) With what did Jesus awaken Lazarus? With his Word. “Lazarus come out. “If you listen to this Word you will live. In John 6. “the Word I have spoken to you are Spirit and they are Life. Jesus asked Martha then, Do you believe that? Do you too? Do you believe he can restore you and that all hope is not lost and that he can never come too late? How can we too give life and hope to others in this season; especially those in need of help! How can we restore hopes? To give the joy of life is our mission as in Jesus, “I have come that they may have life and have it in full.
