THEME: “JESUS WEPT”

This is the 5th Sunday of Lent. To weep is a sign of grief and distress. It is a sign that portrays one’s innermost feelings and outward composure. The sight of tears gushing out from the eyes show a moment of discomfort. But sometimes one can shade tears of joy when something good happens unexpectedly. The case of Jesus’ weeping, shows his human nature and feeling for the other. He was emotionally moved with pity to identify with human suffering. Yes, “Jesus wept” (Jn 11:1-45) to manifest his mercy and compassion over sinful humans.

The tears from the eyes of Jesus moved the Jews to say, “See how much he loved him” (Lazarus). God the Father was also moved by the tears from Jesus and Lazarus was brought back to life. Hence, Jesus cried in a loud voice “Lazarus, here! Come out!” The tears from the eyes of Jesus moved the unbeliving Jews to see the glory of God and believe.

That Lazarus came back to life shows that if we believe and become friends of Jesus we shall be raised up on the resurrection day. This has been promised us from of old. “The Lord says this: ‘ I am now going to open your graves; I mean to raise you from your graves” (Ezk.37:12-14). Paul tells us that, “People who are interested only in unspiritual things cannot be pleasing to God” (Rom. 8:8-11). This time of Lent is the time for us to weep for our sins, purify our spirits and come back to life in Christ. May our tears of sorrow move God to heal us, amen. Happy Sunday.
