HOMILY FOR THE 6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A.

THEME: “SAY YES, IF YOU MEAN YES, NO IF YOU MEAN NO”.

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 6th Sunday in ordinary time. The law of God is given to us to guide us and not to mislead us. Those who keep the law are happy people. They obey the commandment to love. Those who love God above all things and love their neighbors are the true friends of God. This law of God is written in our hearts. It is not far from our reach. Every child of God is given wisdom as a guide to keep the commandments. The book of Ecclsiasticus says: “if you wish, you can keep the commandments, to behave faithfully is within your power” (Eccl.15:15-20).

Every human person is endowed with reasoning faculty. This is why human beings are higher than other lower animals. In this sense we are given the freedom to choose what is good and reject what is evil. But some prefer to choose the wrong one which is evil. They deliberately put their hands in fire and avoid the right direction. To keep the commandments of God is to allow wisdom to guide you. The Wisdom from God is spiritual and mysterious . Paul says: “We teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard. .. all that God has prepared for those who love him” (1Cor.2: 6 – 10).

The things God prepared for those who love him are wisdom and love. The knowledge of God is the beginning of wisdom and to love is to keep the greatest commandment of God. Therefore those who love and choose wisdom follow the path of truth. They say “yes” to the Word of God. For this reason, we are blessed when we say yes to God and no to the devil. To enable us to enter the kingdom of heaven we must stand firm in our resolve to follow the right direction. Hence, “All you need say is, “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no, anything more than this comes from the evil one” (Mat. 5:17 – 37). May God guide us to make the right choices amen.
