As long as you have repented of your sins and have confessed them, God forgives you. Your past becomes history, and they can no longer stand against you before God.

THEME: “YOU MUST THEREFORE BE PERFECT JUST AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT”

This is the 7th Sunday in ordinary time (Year A). The readings remind us of who we are and to whom we belong. They tell us about the stuff we are made of and how we ought to live in this world. This means that the Christian life should reflect the life of God. It should replicate God’s gift of love, happiness, and joy . Those who believe should listen to the voice of God saying: “Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy” (Lev. 19: 1-2:17-18). The holiness of God is given to us because we are made in his own image and likeness. We are one with God if we do what he commands. To love is to go extra mile searching for what is missing. Love is missing in the world.

One law common to every religion is Love. Paul asks those who hate others a serious question. “Didn’t you realize that you were God’s temple and that the Spirit of God was living among you? If anybody should destroy the temple of God, God will destroy him, because the temple of God is sacred, and you are that temple” (1 Cor. 3:16-23). The temple is where God dwells. Since we are the temple of God, he dwells in us. This implies that when you hate others you have hated God who dwells in those temples. For this reason we must see the image of God oozing out from others. No one should be an enemy to others for we are one.

The saying, “you must be perfect just as your heavenly father is perfect” (Mtt.5:38-48) brings out the real image and likeness of God in us. To be perfect means to embrace love. “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” Some people will go to such an extent to ask, “who is my neighbor?” It is the other image of God walking along the street like you. It is that person in front of you, or the one standing by your right or left or behind you. It is that poor person out there. It is that sick person abandoned elsewhere. It is that person out there who professes another religious faith. In the sight of God everyone is good until someone proves it wrong. Those who love God must obey the commandment to love. Happy Sunday.
