HOMILY  FOR THE 7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A (57th World Day of Social Communications).

THEME: United in Hope!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese).

Acts 1:12-14; Ps.27:1,4,7-8; I Pet. 4:13-16; John 17:1-11

In today’s first reading we see what takes place just after the ascension of Jesus into heaven. The apostles return to Jerusalem and gather in an upper room. We are told that they were “constantly devoting themselves to prayer” along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and other women and disciples. Here, we see the importance of prayer. Secondly, we also realise the importance of community. The apostles and other disciples gathered together to pray. They were not alone, but were supported by one another.

Furthermore, in the gospel reading, Jesus prays for unity for disciples before he is arrested and taken to be crucified. Just as the apostles recognised the need to pray and devoted themselves to it as they waited in hope, so we too must make time for prayers regularly. In the same vein, we must seek out and support one another in our journey of faith, since the Church is a whole community of believers. Beyond that, we are also called to strive to overcome the divisions that exist in our world and in our communities, while praying for one another as Jesus prayed.

Friends, a prayerful and united community speaks the truth from their hearts. As we celebrate the 57th World Day of Communications today, Pope Francis speaks on the theme: “Speak with the heart: Veritatem facientes in caritate” (speaking the Truth in Charity). Pope Francis goes further to day that, “We should not be afraid of proclaiming the truth, even if it is at times uncomfortable, but of doing so without charity, without heart,” since “We are all called to seek and to speak the truth and to do so with charity.” We pray for the grace to be truly united in prayer, as we speak the truth of Jesus’s message to everyone we meet, Amen.

Good morning dear. Happy Sunday!
