HOMILY FOR SUNDAY MAY 29 2022

Acts 7:55-60; Rev. 22:12-14,16-17,20; John 17:20-26

How often do we make excuses for others when we pray? We prefer a God of justice and vengeance much more than a God of mercy and compassion. This is especially so when we’ve been offended and hurt by others. But what happens when we’ve been very bad ourselves? All of a sudden we remember that God is all forgiving. We must learn something from the relationship God has with us. God is patient, ready to listen, and ready to forgive.

In like manner, we too must always find a reason to let go and forgive. We need to understand why Stephen was able to pray for those who killed him right as they were doing so. He took a cue from Jesus, who first forgave us right on the cross out of compassion. He listened with his heart to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and found the courage to forgive his assailants, knowing that they acted in ignorance.

Today being the 56th World Day of Communications, we are called to listen more with the heart. Only the heart is able to love beyond disappoints, hurts and failings. We must move beyond just waiting for others to say something to actually paying attention to what they say with love. This is why Jesus prays earnestly in the Gospel reading that we should be one. It is indeed time to wash our robes clean, that we might be found worthy to approach the city gates, and have a right to life. Are we listening with the ears of our hearts?

Good evening dear. Have a glorious Sunday.
