HOMILY FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE MY SON, THE BELOVED; MY FAVOUR RESTS ON YOU”
BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu
Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11/ Titus 2:11-17; 3:4-7/Luke 3:15-16,21-22
On this Sunday after Epiphany, the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord. As God the Son, Jesus needed no Baptism. He accepted to be baptized by John in order to show us what John stood for and the importance of Baptism. Every baptized person becomes initiated into the body of Christ. Such a person is made a new child of God and a follower of Christ. Baptism cleanses us of original sin which all inherited from Adam and Eve. We have been consoled by God as Isaiah writes: “Console my people’ console them says your God”(Is.40:1-5ff).

Having been washed clean through Baptism, we can now receive the grace of God with joy. This is because, “God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God” (Titus 2:11-14. 3:4-7). As the baptized children of God, we are expected to be Christ-like.
Being called the children of God through Baptism, we are meant to listen to the voice of God saying to each one of us; “You are my Son/daughter, the Beloved, my favour rests on you”(Lk. 3:15-16, 21-22). As one filled with joy the Holy Spirit shall descend upon you. In this way, you will embrace others with the love of God . May God renew in our hearts the anointing of our Baptism amen. Happy Sunday to you all.
