HOMILY FOR THE DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY — YEAR C

HOMILY FOR THE DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “WE HAVE SEEN THE LORD!”
BY: Fr Justus Oruh
Acts 5:12-16, Rev. 1:9-13, 17-19, John 20:1-9
(a) We have seen the Lord! This is the joy and the Good News of Easter. It was the Faith experience of the Apostles as the risen Lord visited them. They rejoiced when they saw the Lord. In this Experience, Christ breathed on to them the power of the Holy Spirit, greeted them, “peace be with you” It was an experience of peace which the world cannot give.

(b) We have seen the Lord! Christ showed them in this vision, the wounds and signs of his passion on the cross. Here they learned the compassion of Christ, which wrought our salvation. From his opened side they learned and experienced the sacred heart of Jesus Christ full of mercy and compassion. They experienced the “Divine Mercy”
(c) But Thomas was not there in the gathering. He missed the first time, the breath of the Holy Spirit, the greetings of peace of Christ and the experience of the wounds and compassion of Christ. He was doubtful because he never had at that time, like others, the “personal experience of Christ” within the Faith community. This is usually the case and fate of all who absent themselves or do not participate truly in the community of Faith. They lack spiritual experiences, they are doubtful, and always seeking evidence. But Faith experience though having rational basis is not like empirical facts. Empirical proof is not what Thomas needed but a Faith experience- that is personal. When he eventually had his own spiritual experience and vision, he exclaimed, “my Lord and my God! Some stories written in the Bible may be lacking in congruency of empirical facts but they are enough to communicate to us the Faith experience which leads us to the vision of the Lord. They are written that we may believe. We have seen the Lord! This is the fulfillment of our journey on earth and the culmination of our Faith Experience, to see the Lord on the last day.
